How to Grow Snow Peas
How to Grow Snow Peas
  1. Choose the Right Time and Location:
  • Snow peas prefer cool weather and are best grown in the cooler months, as they don't tolerate heat well.
  • In most climates, sow seeds from autumn to early spring.
  • Frost will kill flowers (but not plants) so if in a frost zone plant in late winter - spring
  • Select a location with full sun or light afternoon shade in hotter climates.
  • Ensure the soil drains well or consider raised beds or pots.
  1. Prepare the Soil and Support:
  • Improve the soil with compost or other soil improvers. Adding phosphorus when planting can help with creating strong stem to support
  • Set up a trellis or support system before planting to avoid disturbing the roots later.
  • Consider stakes, wires, or strings for taller varieties.
  1. Plant the Seeds:
  • Sow seeds about 2-3cm deep and 10mm apart in rows.
  • For double rows, create little holes and plant 2-3 seeds per hole.
  • Plant on each side of a trellis
  • Lightly cover the seeds with soil and water well.
  • Do not water again until germination as this can cause seeds to rot
  1. Care for Your Plants:
  • Keep the soil consistently moist, but not wet, after germination.
  • Add mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Fertilize every couple of weeks with a water-soluble or liquid fertilizer suitable for vegetables.
  1. Pest and Disease Control:
  • Be mindful of slugs and snails, especially when the seedlings are young.
  • Consider using a milk spray for fungal diseases.
  • Watch out for aphids and treat them promptly with homemade white oil,
  1. Harvest:
  • Snow peas are usually ready for harvest about 10 weeks after sowing, or 10 days after flowering.
  • Pick them when the pods are young, tender, and flat.
  • Harvest regularly to encourage more pod production.
  • Use scissors to harvest to avoid damaging the stems.
