How to Grow Leeks
To grow leeks from seed, start seeds indoors in seed trays or pots with moist soil, transplanting seedlings when they reach 6-8 inches tall. Alternatively, sow seeds directly into prepared garden beds. Planting seedlings into deep trenches or holes and gradually filling them with soil, or earthing-up as they grow, produces the desired long, white stalk. Leeks need a sunny spot, consistently moist soil, and good feeding to reach maturity in about 4-6 months. Plant from September to January.  Leeks planted earlier will produce fatter stems for winter eating and those planted after Christmas will produce more slender stems.  Harvest over winter for soups, stews and onion alternatives in dishes Starting Seeds (Indoors) Sow seeds: In trays or pots, sow seeds about 2 cm apart, covering them with a thin layer of soil. Germination: Keep the soil moist and warm (on a windowsill or in a greenhouse) for germination. which takes about 10-21 days Transplanting: Once seedlings are 8-12cm tall, they are ready to be transplanted. Acclimatize: Before planting outdoors, harden off the seedlings by exposing them to outdoor conditions for increasing periods over one to two weeks. Growing in the Garden Choose a location: Select a sunny spot with well-drained soil enriched with plenty of organic matter. Plant seedlings: Plant seedlings in a trench 10-20 cm deep, spacing them about 10 cm apart. Blanching: To get a longer white stem, plant seedlings in a trench and gradually fill it with soil as the leek grows. Water & Feed: Keep the soil moist but not wet, and regularly apply liquid fertilizers to encourage growth. Weed control: Keep the area around the leeks weed-free to prevent competition for nutrients. Harvesting Maturity: Leeks typically take 4-6 months to mature. Check diameter: Harvest when the leek stem reaches about 1-1.5 inches in diameter. Pull and Clean: Gently pull the leek from the ground, shake off the soil, and peel off the outer layers for a clean stem ready for cooking.
