How to Grow Capsicum
To grow capsicums from seed, sow seeds in seed-raising mix in trays in a warm spot about 5mm deep, keeping the soil moist but not wet, and wait for germination (7-21 days) at 22-35°C. After the danger of frost has passed and seedlings have true leaves and are 5-10cm tall, transplant them to a sunny, well-prepared garden bed or large pot, spacing them 40-60cm apart. Provide regular watering, compost for nutrients, and stakes for larger varieties, then harvest firm, glossy fruit when it reaches the desired color.
1. Seed Starting
Timing: In cool climates, start seeds indoors 6 weeks before the last frost.
Materials: Use a seed-raising mix in trays, punnets, or individual pots.
Sowing: Sow seeds about 5mm deep, covering them lightly with the mix.
Conditions: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. A warm spot (22-35°C) or a heated mat helps with germination.
Growth: Seeds should germinate in 1-3 weeks.

2. Transplanting
Timing: Once the seedlings have their first true leaves, are large enough to handle (5-10cm), and all danger of frost has passed, they are ready to be transplanted.
Location: Plant them in a sunny, sheltered spot protected from strong winds.
Preparation: Improve the garden soil with compost and well-rotted manure.
Spacing: Space plants 40-60cm apart.
3. Care & Growth
Watering: Capsicums need regular watering, especially as fruit develops.
Feeding: Feed plants with a high-potassium liquid feed once they start to flower, or apply weak compost tea every few days.
Support: Larger varieties, especially bell peppers, may need staking to support the weight of the fruit.
Pinching: Pinching out the growing tips of spindly plants encourages more fruit-carrying branches.
4. Harvesting
When to pick: Harvest capsicums when they are firm and glossy.
Technique: Use a sharp pair of secateurs to cut the fruit from the plant to avoid damaging its branches.
Yield: The more you pick, the more the plant will produce.
Color: Leaving fruit on the plant to ripen to its full color (red, yellow, purple) will increase sweetness and heat, but it will reduce overall yield.
