Aquadulce Broad Bean – Australia’s Most Popular Commercial Variety
Aquadulce is the most widely grown commercial broad bean in Australia, valued for its reliability, strong yields, and large seed size. Pods reach around 15 cm long and 3 cm wide, medium green, and typically contain up to 5 plump beans. Aquadulce produces the largest commercially available broad bean seed, with attractive purple‑and‑white flowers that mature into brown seeds.
Plants usually grow 90–100 cm tall, though height can vary depending on planting time and seasonal conditions. Expect an approximate 75‑day maturity from planting.
Broad beans thrive in cool weather, making Aquadulce ideal for Autumn and Winter sowing across most regions. Pod set can be affected by frost during flowering, cold snaps, or excessive heat, and good bee activity will improve pollination and yield.
A later shorter podded broad bean, good taste, dark green, 15 cm pods. Plants grow to approx 1.5 metre. Sow Autumn through to early Spring. Winter sowing in mild conditions only. For sweeter beans harvest when pods are smaller.
